Sometimes I develop severe panic attacks when I am in a new
environment. Is there is treatment for this disorder?
Yes, you may have a condition called agoraphobia. This condition
does respond to a number of SSRIs (newer antidepressants). Some patients may
benefit from a combination of an SSRI and a benzodiazepine. The problem with benzodiazepines
is that you may develop tolerance and physical dependence after prolonged use.
You may need to take these medications for 3-4 months and then slowly taper
them to the lowest dose. In most cases, treatment is required for long periods.
